MAIKO SAN
Personal project on the theme of maiko-san.
Living in Kyoto, I discovered this fascinating world and remain deeply inspired by the poetic harmony of colors these artists embody.
Through our encounters — odori (dance) performances and private events —
I’ve had the privilege of meeting them and preserving those memories through my drawings.
I continue to pursue this project with joy and admiration for the incredible Kyoto culture I have the chance to witness.
The first maiko I met was Ichiyuri-san, from Pontocho, in November 2024.
That encounter sparked my inspiration and gave me the wish to one day draw all the maiko of Pontocho.
I also follow, with great interest and passion, the events and traditions of Kyoto’s other kagai — the historic districts where geiko (geisha) and maiko (apprentice geisha) live and perform.
